The Clinical Staging Model - Expanding on Remission and Recovery in Stage 2

The Clinical Staging model places an emphasis on where an individual sits along the continuum of ‘progression’ of psychosis, enabling clinicians to target interventions relevant to the stage of illness. Stage 2 of the model covers a broad continuum, from onset of illness, to remission of symptoms, psychological recovery and adjustment, and the resumption of social and functional activities. On the other hand, a phase-based approach to psychosis in the literature describes psychosis in terms of: the acute, then the recovery phases of early, mid and late or prolonged recovery. At the Early Psychosis Prevention and Intervention Centre (EPPIC), a clinical case audit of registered clients suggested considerable inter-rater variability between clinicians’ perceptions of the phase of illness. As a result, it was identified that Stage 2 required further exploration and definition. Results from the clinical audit on the stages of recovery of young people treated within the EPPIC program will be presented. This research explores the applicability of The Staging Model to the period of remission of first episode psychosis and expands on the descriptors of Stage 2. Further investigation into the features of Stage 2 will assist with targeting clinical interventions to an individual’s stage of recovery and in furthering our understanding of the process of remission from first episode psychosis.
